Organisation: Founded in 1499 tUniversidad de Alcala logohe University of Alcala is one of the oldest in Spain. Currently it is part of the Madrid public university system holding time-honoured education in the humanities and social sciences as well as degree subjects in emerging scientific fields such as Environmental Sciences. It encompasses a researcher staff of 1,616 and 2,2836 students being one of Spain’s medium-sized universities. It holds 15 Faculties and Schools and 38 doctoral programs which are rapidly evolving. It has outstanding research qualifications in several emerging fields all of which, together with the Science and Technology Park, are a key factor in its projection abroad, while also acting as a dynamo for activities in our local region. The university has a wide experience in EU projects related to forest science e.g. BIOCORES, MEGAFiReS, INFLAME, REFORLAN etc. The group currently participates in EVOLTREE: Evolution of trees as drivers of terrestrial biodiversity. (PI: R. Alía, INIA); CARBO-Extreme: The terrestrial Carbon cycle under Climate Variability and Extremes, a Pan European synthesis (PI: M. Reichstein, Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry) and TERRABITES. The Terrestrial Biosphere in the Earth System (PI: C. Reick, Max Planck Institute for Meteorology).
